BRINGING SCULPTURES FROM A PODIUM TO THE STAGE
In early 2018, dancer and choreographer Johan Kobborg contacts me to discuss a possible collaboration on his latest project: Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet, produced by Polunin Ink, featuring Serguei Polunin and Alina Cojocaru.
Johan gives me as a reference, a pair of sculptures that I produced the previous year. He would like to draw inspiration from them to create the set’s decor. After a few brainstorming and working sessions, we come to the conclusion that the solution is already in front of us, by simply using the sculpture reference pieces as they are. Surprisingly, for me at least, the only design modification ended up doing was to slightly modify a few flights of stairs to allow Juliette to access her balcony without too much acrobatics.
We also decided to add wheels and hinges connecting the two modules. These additions make it possible to quickly change the configuration of the stage during the show.
